CHICAGO - Five different players scored in double figures to help lead the Saint Xavier University men's basketball team to a convincing 86-60 victory over Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) foe Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.) Wednesday night in Whiting, Ind. Junior guard Brad Karp (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso) led the way with a game-best 20 points for the Cougars, while sophomore guard Jack Krieger (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) and senior point guard Anthony Grant (Calumet City, Ill./Prairie State CC/Thornridge) each chipped in 13 points apiece. Senior point guard Roosevelt Green (Markham, Ill./Tinley Park) added 11 points and game-leading 10 assists, while senior forward Dominique Harvey (Chicago, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor) came off the bench to score 10 points.
Krieger also led SXU on the boards pulling down 12 rebounds on the night. The game started off tight before the Cougars used a 17-3 run midway through the first half to pull away for good. The key run was sparked by a Harvey three-pointer with just under 10 minutes to play in the opening frame. Hitting 55 percent (21-for-38) of its first-half shot attempts from the field, Saint Xavier built a 51-29 halftime advantage. The Cougar defense racked up 10 steals in the game, which helped lead to 17 turnovers by the Crimson Wave. SXU had only four turnovers in the entire contest. CCSJ never threatened in the second half with the Cougars holding at least a 19-point lead throughout the final period.
Saint Xavier (4-3 overall/4-2 CCAC) continues conference play on Saturday, December 1, with a home game against Judson University (Ill.). The game is scheduled for a 3 p.m. start at the Shannon Center in Chicago.
