Whiting, Ind. - Opening the game on a 15-2 run and leading by as many as 20 points in the first half, the No. 7 ranked Saint Xavier University women's basketball team defeated Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.), 80-65, in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) action Wednesday evening in Whiting, Ind. The Cougars (5-1 overall/5-1 CCAC) had three players score in double figures to lead the charge paced by sophomore guard/forward Suzie Broski (Rockford, Ill./Boylan Catholic) with 21 points. In addition, sophomore guard/forward Morgan Stuut (Marcellus, Mich./Three Rivers) had another double-double effort of 17 points and 10 rebounds, while junior point guard Jordan Brandt (Winamac, Ind./Winamac) added 10 points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals.
After the hot start, the outcome was never in doubt as SXU built its lead to 20 points, 26-6, midway through the first half and led by as many as 28 points early in the second half. Brandt kicked off the scoring with a three-pointer on Saint Xavier's first possession of the game. The Cougars hit 51 percent (18-for-35) of their shot attempts from the field in the opening frame. SXU also did an excellent job of taking care of the basketball Wednesday committing just nine turnovers, while collecting 11 steals in the game using its relentless defense.
Saint Xavier (5-1 overall/5-1 CCAC) continues conference play on Saturday, December 1, with a home game against Judson University (Ill.). The game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start at the Shannon Center in Chicago.
