CHICAGO – Hitting all eight of its free throw attempts in the final 50 seconds of play, No. 5 ranked Cardinal Stritch University (Wis.) kept Saint Xavier University at bay taking an 86-81 victory in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) men's basketball action Tuesday night at the Shannon Center in Chicago. Junior guard Brad Karp (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso) had a huge outing for the Cougars finishing with 30 points and 12 rebounds, both game-highs. Karp's big scoring performance was matched by Stritch's senior center Darren Moore with 30 points on 13-for-18 shooting from the field. CSU took advantage of 18 offensive rebounds in the game, which helped lead to 22 second-chance points. SXU led 73-60 with just under eight minutes to play in regulation before the Wolves closed things out with a 26-8 run.
Saint Xavier shot 53 percent (31-for-58) from the floor Tuesday, but was hampered by 14 turnovers on the night. Senior point guards Anthony Grant (Calumet City, Ill./Prairie State CC/Thornridge) and Roosevelt Green (Markham, Ill./Tinley Park) each had solid outings for the Cougars. Grant finished with 15 points on the night, while Green hit three three-pointers en route to 13 points to go along with four assists. Sophomore guard Jack Krieger (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) narrowly missed a double-double effort with eight points and nine rebounds for SXU.
Saint Xavier (3-3 overall/3-2 CCAC) takes some time off for Thanksgiving before returning to action against conference opponent Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.) on Wednesday, November 28. The road contest is set to tip off at 7:30 p.m. (central).
