Palos Heights, Ill. – With three players netting over 20 points, the Saint Xavier University men's basketball team defeated Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) opponent Trinity Christian College (Ill.), 106-103, on Saturday afternoon in Palos Heights, Ill. The Cougars were led by junior guard Brad Karp (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso) and senior forward Dominique Harvey (Chicago, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor), who each scored 28 points for the Cougars. Harvey finished with a double-double in the contest collecting a game-high 13 rebounds. Sophomore guard Jack Krieger (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) recorded 24 points and eight boards for SXU as well.
Senior point guard Roosevelt Green (Markham, Ill./Tinley Park) facilitated the ball well with a game-high six assists to go along with his 12 points. The host Trolls were led by senior guard BJ Wortham, who scored 28 points to go along with seven rebounds. Sophomore guard Mike Sutter chipped in 20 points for Trinity Christian on the day as well. The Cougars never trailed in the game and only found themselves tied early on in the first period. Saint Xavier had a 19-point advantage at the 7:21 mark of the first period following a lay-up by sophomore point guard Sean Crary (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point). SXU went into halftime leading by 11, 56-45.
Saint Xavier built the lead back up to 16 points, 72-56, early in the second half, but the Trolls did not go down quietly. Trinity Christian used a couple of key runs over the game's next 10 minutes to eat away at the deficit and closed to within a point, 95-94, with just under three minutes to play. The game went down to the wire as TCC kept it close the rest of the way thanks in part to a key three-point play by junior guard Joel Morris with under a minute to play. Harvey sealed the outcome with a lay-up with 19 seconds remaining to ensure SXU the victory. The Trolls had a chance to tie the game, but missed its final shot in the closing seconds.
Saint Xavier (3-2 overall/3-1 CCAC) returns home for its next game against No. 5 ranked Cardinal Stritch University (Wis.) on Tuesday, November 20 at the Shannon Center in Chicago. The game is slated for a 7 p.m. start.
