Palos Heights, Ill. – Sophomore guard Morgan Stuut (Marcellus, Mich./Three Rivers) recorded a school-record 23 rebounds against Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) rival Trinity Christian College as the Saint Xavier University women's basketball team defeated the Trolls, 81-58, in Palos Heights, Ill., Saturday afternoon. Stuut broke the previous record of 19 rebounds achieved by former standout forward Brittany Jones on January 22, 2011, against Purdue University-Calumet (Ind.). Stuut also led the Cougars in scoring with a game-high 20 points to go along with her massive rebound total. Sophomore forward Suzie Broski (Rockford, Ill./Boylan Catholic) also had a nice game for SXU adding 16 points and four steals.
The Cougar defense came to play Saturday holding the hosts to 28 percent shooting from the floor (17-for-60) and recording 13 steals in the game. Trinity Christian also had difficulty taking care of the basketball committing 27 turnovers. Led by Stuut, Saint Xavier won the rebounding battle with the Trolls by a 52-47 margin. Other key performers for the Cougars Saturday included senior guard Maureen Riley (Alma, Mich./Sacred Heart Academy) and junior guard Niara Harris (Richton Park, Ill./Robert Morris/Rich South) with 10 points apiece. With the game tied at 6-6 early on, SXU used an 11-2 run to build a 17-8 advantage with 13 minutes left in the first half and never looked back. The Cougars led 41-23 at the halftime break and built as high as a 36-point lead late in the second half.
Saint Xavier (3-1 overall, 3-1 CCAC) returns home for its next game against No. 19 ranked Cardinal Stritch University (Wis.) on Tuesday, November 20. The game is set to tip-off at 5 p.m. at the Shannon Center in Chicago.
