CHICAGO – The Saint Xavier University football squad recently had four players earn first team recognition on the 2012 Capital One Academic All-District College Division District 3 Football Team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). The four players selected were senior wide receiver Shane Zackery (Rockford, Ill./Boylan Catholic), senior linebacker Mike Bushnell (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew), sophomore defensive back Clayton Fejedelem (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) and sophomore defensive lineman Greg Hayward (Oak Lawn, Ill./Oak Lawn Community). These four players are now up for consideration for the 2012 Capital One Academic All-America College Division Football Team, which is set to be released on Monday, December 3 at noon (Eastern).
"What these four guys have done both on the football field and in the classroom is absolutely amazing," said SXU head football coach Mike Feminis. "They are a large part of the successful season we are having this year and are some of the hardest working players I have ever coached. Every award that any of these guys receives is well deserved."
Zackery, a senior business management major with a 3.70 cumulative grade-point average (GPA), leads the Cougars with team-highs of 61 catches, 881 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns. Bushnell, a senior biology (pre-medicine) major with a 3.57 GPA, is second on the team in total tackles with 68 (20 solo). Bushnell also has seven tackles for loss, one interception and a fumble recovery this season for Saint Xavier. Fejedelem, a sophomore business major with a 3.32 GPA, is second on the team with three interceptions. Fejedelem is also tied for the team lead in fumble recoveries with two and third on the team in total tackles with 65 (44 solo). Hayward, a sophomore criminal justice major with a 3.71 GPA, leads the team with seven sacks. Hayward also has a team-best two fumble recoveries and he has recorded 10 tackles for losses which is the second best total on the team this season.
Saint Xavier (9-1 overall/4-1 MSFA) competes in the 2012 NAIA Football Championship Series First Round on Saturday, November 17, at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago hosting No. 13 ranked William Penn University (Iowa). The home postseason game is scheduled for a 12 p.m. start.
