Findlay, Ohio – Winning its regular season finale by a score of 28-19 over Robert Morris University (Ill.) this past weekend, sophomore strong safety Clayton Fejedelem (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) and junior kicker/punter Spencer Nolen (Columbia, Tenn./UT-Chattanooga/Columbia Central) were named the Mid-States Football Association (MSFA) Mideast League Defensive and Special Teams Players of the Week, respectively when the league office released its weekly awards Monday morning. With Saturday's victory, SXU finished up its regular season slate with a 9-1 overall record and won a share of the MSFA Mideast League crown with a 4-1 league mark.
Fejedelem racked up a game-leading 12 total tackles (10 solos), including a sack for nine yards. He helped lead a defensive effort that forced two turnovers (fumble, interception) and posted six sacks and nine tackles for losses in the game. It marks the fifth time this season that SXU has earned the defensive award with junior linebacker Zach Dolph (Crest Hill, Ill./Joliet Catholic) claiming it on September 17 and 24, sophomore defensive end JD Barchard (Crystal Lake, Ill./Sioux Falls/Crystal Lake South) on October 29 and junior free safety Jacob Ghinazzi (Rockford, Ill./Boylan Catholic) securing it on September 10. In a game where every point mattered and field position played a key role, Nolen overcame sloppy field conditions to convert all four of his extra-point attempts and record two touchbacks on five kickoffs. He also had a punt of 26 yards.
Saint Xavier (9-1 overall/4-1 MSFA) kicks off postseason play this Saturday with a 2012 NAIA Football Championship Series First Round match-up against No. 13 William Penn University (Iowa). The game is scheduled for a 12 p.m. start at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago.
