Arlington Heights, Ill. – Led by three touchdown receptions from senior wide receiver Shane Zackery (Rockford, Ill./Boylan Catholic), the No. 4 ranked Saint Xavier University football team wrapped up its 2012 regular season slate with a 28-19 non-conference win over Robert Morris University (Ill.) Saturday afternoon at Morris Field in Arlington Heights, Ill. The Cougars (9-1 overall) had to overcome sloppy field conditions due to the day's heavy rains, but still managed to rack up 440 yards of total offense. Senior quarterback Jimmy Coy (Park Ridge, Ill./Valdosta State/El Camino College/Maine South) had another big game for SXU completing 28 of his 46 pass attempts for 352 yards through the air and four touchdowns. Saint Xavier built a 14-0 lead through the first quarter of play, but the Eagles hung tough scoring a touchdown early in the second quarter and staying within striking distance the rest of the way.
Zackery had a team-best nine catches on the day for 95 yards and his three scores. Fellow senior receiver Chase Catton (Washington, Ill./Washington) also had a big game for Saint Xavier totaling a game-high 102 receiving yards on eight catches with a third-quarter touchdown. The Cougar defense was led by sophomore strong safety Clayton Fejedelem (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) with 12 total tackles (10 solos).
Coy found Zackery open on a 12-yard touchdown reception to cap the game's first drive. The drive was highlighted by a big 54-yard catch and run by Catton that put the Cougars at the RMU 33-yard line. Coy and Zackery connected again to close out the opening quarter, this time on a 35-yard scoring strike to give Saint Xavier a 14-0 lead. The Eagles took advantage of a turnover on downs by the Cougars and marched 62 yards down the field to cut into the 14-point deficit with an 11-yard touchdown reception by sophomore wideout Deshawn Weaver. However, the Eagles missed the resulting extra-point attempt making the score, 14-6, with 5:15 to play in the first half. SXU responded on its next drive with a third touchdown pass by Coy to Zackery from 16 yards out to make it, 21-6. RMU was not done either and a 40-yard touchdown reception by junior receiver TaDarrius Douglas late in the quarter made it, 21-13, at the half.
On its first possession of the second half, Coy extended the Saint Xavier lead, 28-13, when he found Catton open on a seven-yard touchdown grab. That would complete the third quarter scoring as the Cougar defense kept the Eagles off the scoreboard thanks to a pair of big turnovers, a fumble and an interception. Weaver hauled in another touchdown on a one-yard catch late in the fourth quarter to wrap up the game's scoring.
