South Bend, Ind. – Senior point guard Anthony Grant (Calumet City, Ill./Prairie State CC/Thornridge) and junior guard Brad Karp (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso) both scored 13 points apiece to lead No. 14 ranked Saint Xavier University, but it was not enough as Indiana University-South Bend (IUSB) picked up a 72-67 victory in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) men's basketball opener for both squads Wednesday night in South Bend, Ind. Grant also led the Cougars on the boards with six rebounds, while Karp posted a team-best four steals. SXU got a lift off the bench from sophomore guard Jack Krieger (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) with 12 points, including a pair of three-pointers.
The Titans were impressive offensively shooting 53 percent (28-for-53) from the field in the game. Junior guard Chris Beam led all scorers with 15 points, while senior guard Alanzo Bass had solid numbers as well with 13 points and game-high six assists. SXU led 39-35 at halftime and built its largest lead of the game, 50-42, with just under 16 minutes left in the second half off a three-pointer by Grant. However, the Titans quickly erased the lead and took a 53-52 lead near the 10-minute mark of the second half. A key three-point play by Indiana-South Bend senior guard Steven Heatherly with 1:27 to play gave the host Titans a lead they would not relinquish.
Saint Xavier (0-2 overall/0-1 CCAC) returns for its home opener against CCAC rival Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.) on Saturday, November 10. The game is slated for a 3 p.m. start at the Shannon Center in Chicago.
