South Bend, Ind. – Led by another impressive effort by sophomore guard Suzie Broski (Rockford, Ill./Boylan Catholic) and sophomore forward Morgan Stuut (Marcellus, Mich./Three Rivers), the No. 6 ranked Saint Xavier University women's basketball team survived a close game with Indiana University-South Bend (IUSB) winning 67-65 in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) opener for both teams. Stuut had a monster game for the Cougars with a double-double effort of 22 points and 11 rebounds, while Broski connected on nine of her 16 shot attempts on the night for 21 points. The SXU defense came through when it counted Wednesday racking up 11 steals, which helped cause 25 IUSB turnovers.
Junior forward Chrissy Heine (Hampshire, Ill./Hampshire) was the next leading scorer for Saint Xavier with seven points toward the victory. The host Titans had four players score in double figures led by junior forward Emily Strilich with team-bests of 15 points and eight rebounds. It was a tight game throughout with neither squad able to build more than a six-point advantage. SXU capitalized on offense generated by its defense scoring 28 of its 67 points in the game off Titan miscues. IUSB proved tough in the post winning the rebounding battle, 35-29, and scoring 26 of its 65 points in the paint.
Saint Xavier (1-0 overall, 1-0 CCAC) begins its home slate against CCAC rival Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.) on Saturday, November 10, at the Shannon Center in Chicago. The game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
