Elgin, Ill. – Despite scoring three goals in the game, the No. 7 seeded Saint Xavier University women's soccer team had its 2012 season come to an end Saturday afternoon following a tough 4-3 overtime loss to No. 16 ranked and No. 2 seeded Judson University (Ill.) at Dawson Field in Elgin, Ill. The first six goals of the game all came in the second half after both defenses played tough in first-half action. The Cougars fell behind 2-0 early into the second half, but answered with a pair of goals to tie things up. The host Eagles posted the game-winning goal just over two minutes into the extra period on an unassisted shot by JU sophomore forward Angela Bianchi.
Senior defender Sara Cervenka (Sycamore, Ill./Northern Illinois University) got SXU's first score when she halved JU's 2-0 lead with a goal in the 64th minute. Just over a minute later, the Cougars tied it up when sophomore midfielder Marissa Graves (Joliet, Ill./Joliet West) scored off an assist from Cervenka. Seconds later, Saint Xavier fell behind 3-2 after a goal by Judson sophomore forward Jenna Steffensen, but SXU bounced right back again and tied it up following an unassisted goal by sophomore midfielder Morgan Graves (Joliet, Ill./Joliet West) in the 72nd minute. The score remained, 3-3, for the rest of regulation until Bianchi netted the game winner in overtime. Freshman keeper Cortney Jerzy (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport Township) recorded 12 saves for the Cougars. Saint Xavier finished with 10 shot attempts, including seven on goal, compared to 21 total shot attempts by Judson with 16 of them coming on goal.
Saint Xavier finishes its 2012 campaign with a 10-8-1 overall record. The Cougars finished in a three-way tie for fifth place in the final conference standings with a 6-5 CCAC mark.
