Marion, Ind. – Junior guard Brad Karp (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso) finished with team-highs of 21 points and seven rebounds, but it was not enough as the No. 14 ranked Saint Xavier University men's basketball team dropped its season opener to No. 4 ranked Indiana Wesleyan University, 91-74, Tuesday night in Marion, Ind. The Cougars (0-1 overall) led 44-40 at the half, but the host Wildcats scored 51 second-half points to rally and pull away for the victory hitting 64 percent (35-for-55) of their shots from the field in the game. IWU had junior guard Jordan Weidner (28), senior guard Aaron Martin (27) and senior forward Patrick Hopkins (20) each score 20 or more points in Tuesday's game.
Senior forward Dominique Harvey (Chicago, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor) and senior point guard Anthony Grant (Calumet City, Ill./Prairie State CC/Thornridge) also scored in double figures for Saint Xavier. Harvey posted 16 points shooting 7-for-14 from the field, while Grant dropped in 13 points to go along with three steals. The Cougars held a 20-10 rebounding edge in the first half and the hard work on the boards paid off translating into a four-point halftime lead despite the hot, first-half shooting by the Wildcats (17-for-25, 68 percent). However, IWU got more aggressive on the rebounds after the break and the hot shooting continued allowing the home team to erase the deficit and use a 14-2 run midway through the second half to pull away for good.
Saint Xavier (0-1 overall) heads to Nashville, Tenn., for an exhibition game against NCAA Division I Vanderbilt University (Tenn.) on Friday, November 2. The game is scheduled for a 6 p.m. (central) tip-off at Memorial Gymnasium.
