Findlay, Ohio – Following the 54-10 victory over Concordia University (Mich.) Saturday by No. 5 ranked Saint Xavier University, sophomore defensive end JD Barchard (Crystal Lake, Ill./Sioux Falls/Crystal Lake South) was named the Mid-States Football Association (MSFA) Mideast League Defensive Player of the Week when the league office released its weekly awards Monday. With the victory, SXU improved to 7-1 overall and 3-1 in the MSFA Mideast League. Barchard helped lead a defensive effort that included six forced turnovers and allowed just 131 yards of total offense.
Barchard racked up five total tackles (one solo), including 1.5 tackles for losses totaling eight yards. In addition to the stops, he also posted two quarterback hurries, a pass break-up and a forced fumble in the game. It was the first time in his young career that Barchard has received the weekly conference honor. It marks the fourth time this season that SXU has earned the defensive award with junior linebacker Zach Dolph (Crest Hill, Ill./Joliet Catholic) claiming it on September 17 and 24 and junior free safety Jacob Ghinazzi (Rockford, Ill./Boylan Catholic) securing it on September 10.
Saint Xavier (7-1 overall/3-1 MSFA) prepares for a huge MSFA Mideast League and NAIA match-up against No. 1 Marian University (Ind.) on Saturday, November 3. The key game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. kickoff at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago.
