Bourbonnais, Ill. – Giving up three unanswered goals in first-half action, the Saint Xavier University women's soccer team failed to slow down No. 10 ranked Olivet Nazarene University and fell 5-0 in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) and regular season finale Saturday evening at Tiger Field in Bourbonnais, Ill. The Cougars end their 2012 regular season slate with a 10-7-1 overall mark and a 6-5-0 conference record, while the Tigers finish up undefeated in CCAC play at 11-0-0 and 15-2-0 overall. ONU was dominate from the onset totaling 28 shots in the game compared to just one for SXU.
Sophomore midfielder Katie Smith scored Olivet Nazarene's first two goals, one in the 24th minute and the second in the 31st minute. The first goal came unassisted, while the next one was set up on a pass by senior forward Jordan Wallek. In the 41st minute, the Tigers notched their third goal of the game when sophomore forward Jessica Higer found the back of the net off an assist from freshman forward Elizabeth Hetrick. In the second half, Hetrick scored a goal of her own in the 71st minute off a pass by senior defender Katrina Holm. An own goal by SXU in the 74th minute capped the scoring for the game. Senior keeper Sam Formella (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport Township) finished with 13 saves for the Cougars.
Saint Xavier (10-7-1 overall/6-5-0 CCAC) awaits its final seed for the 2012 CCAC Women's Soccer Tournament, which begins on Saturday, November 3. The Cougars play their first round match-up on the road next weekend having not secured one of the top four seeds.
