Kansas City, Mo. - With its season-opening exhibition against NCAA Division I DePaul University (Ill.) less than a week away, the Saint Xavier University women's basketball team received the No. 6 ranking when the NAIA released its Women's Division II Basketball Coaches' Top 25 Preseason Poll from the national office earlier this week. The Cougars, who return three starters from last year's squad including NAIA All-American Honorable Mention and Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Freshman of the Year Morgan Stuut (Marcellus, Mich./Three Rivers), are coming off another tremendous season. Last year, SXU compiled a 24-9 overall record, finished second overall in the CCAC regular season standings with a 7-3 mark, won the CCAC Tournament with a 79-65 victory over Robert Morris University (Ill.) and made its 10th straight appearance at the NAIA Women's Basketball National Championships.
"This ranking is based on the tradition of success that our program has built over the last decade," said SXU women's basketball coach Bob Hallberg. "The key for this team is to not get to caught up in the preseason rank and make sure we start the season strong and validate that ranking. The team has worked hard during the preseason practice sessions and I anticipate another big season."
Saint Xavier opens its 2012-13 campaign on Tuesday, October 30, with an exhibition game against NCAA Division I foe DePaul University (Ill.) at the McGrath-Phillips Arena in Chicago. The game is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
