CHICAGO - Saint Xavier University senior quarterback Jimmy Coy (Park Ridge, Ill./Valdosta State/El Camino College/Maine South) was named both a NAIA Football Offensive Athlete of the Week by Beyond Sports Network (BSN) and the Mid-States Football Association (MSFA) Mideast League Offensive Player of the Week when the awards were announced Monday. Coy tied a school record with his seven touchdown passes Saturday in a 55-31 road victory over MSFA Mideast League foe Taylor University (Ind.) in Upland, Ind. He also completed 31 of his 50 pass attempts in the game for 414 yards and helped lead a big second-half rally after SXU trailed 24-21 at the half. The 55-point output was a season-high total for the Cougars this fall.
The only other time Saint Xavier threw seven touchdowns in a game was on September 26, 2009, when former standout Anthony Kropp (2007-10) hit the mark in a 51-0 win over Quincy University (Ill.). Coy's 414 yards through the air Saturday was his second highest passing yardage total of the year after he threw for 426 yards in the season-opening victory over Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.) on September 1. He currently leads the MSFA Mideast League in passing yardage averaging 264.2 yards per game. It is the second time this season Coy has earned both these awards this season. He earned the BSN honor in week one following his game against Olivet Nazarene and earned the MSFA distinction on September 10 after his big performance in SXU's 31-3 win over No. 7 St. Francis (Ill.) in the home opener.
Saint Xavier (6-1 overall/2-1 MSFA) hosts Concordia University (Mich.) for a conference match-up on Saturday, October 27. The game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. kickoff at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago.
