CHICAGO – Senior midfielder Nancy Schueth (Lincoln, Neb./Saint Pius X) scored an unassisted goal early in the second half, but it was not enough to offset a pair of first-half goals by Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) as Saint Xavier University fell 3-1 in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) women's soccer action Tuesday night in Chicago. The loss ends a four-game win streak for the Cougars, who now sit at 9-5-1 overall and 5-3-0 (tie for fifth place) in the conference standings. IIT improves to 4-10-1 on the year with the victory and evens up its CCAC record at 4-4-0 for a seventh place tie.
Freshman midfielder Adrianna Maron got the scoring started for the Scarlet Hawks in the 28th minute of action when she scored off a rebounded shot attempt by sophomore forward Veronica Torres. Less than seven minutes later, Illinois Tech built a 2-0 advantage when senior midfielder Heather Bickerton finished off a cross from Torres. IIT took its two-goal lead into halftime, but Schueth cut the deficit in half in the 49th minute when she scored on her unassisted shot. Unfortunately for the Cougars, Maron struck again to post the Scarlet Hawks' third goal of the night on a give and go from Torres. Freshman keeper Cortney Jerzy (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport Township) finished the game with four saves for SXU.
Saint Xavier (9-5-1 overall/5-3-0 CCAC) takes on Roosevelt University (Ill.) on Saturday, October 20, for another conference road game. The contest is scheduled for a 9 a.m. start Saturday in Chicago.
