South Bend, Ind. – With junior Brian Corcoran (Chicago, Ill./Brother Rice) finishing in second place overall out of 118 runners with a time of 25:26.2, the Saint Xavier University men's cross country team traveled to South Bend, Ind., this past Friday to race in the Bethel College Cross Country Invitational 8K (8,000 meters) race at St. Patrick's County Park. The Cougars finished third out of the nine teams competing at the meet. SXU trailed only No. 11 Aquinas College and Indiana Institute of Technology in the final team standings. Indiana Tech is receiving votes in the latest NAIA Men's Cross Country Top 25 Poll.
Next for Saint Xavier was junior Chris Shellenberger (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) finishing in 19th place with a time of 26:29.2. Freshman Eric Hancock (Mishawaka, Ind./Mishawaka) and junior Shane Kenney (Porter, Ind./Chesterton) finished in 20th and 24th place, respectively. Hancock had a time of 26:29.8 and Kenney finished with a time of 26:46.8. Rounding out the top five for the Cougars was senior Ricky Olmedo (Blue Island, Ill./Calumet College/Robert Morris), who came in 26th place and had a time of 25:50.
"I think this was the best meet of the season for us," said SXU men's cross country coach Ed McAllister. "Chris Shellenberger and Ricky Olmedo ran very well for us and the pack is coming together. We will be ready for the next meet coming up on October 20. This team is really starting to find its personality."
Saint Xavier returns to action this Saturday, October 20, at the NAIA Great Lakes Invite in Grand Rapids, Mich. The men's race will take place at Riverside Park starting at 11 a.m (eastern).
