CHICAGO - Senior midfielder Kyle Breitenbach (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso University/Valparaiso) scored an early goal in the 10th minute of play for No. 24 ranked Saint Xavier University, but Holy Cross College (Ind.) scored an equalizing goal later in the half and that would be how things would end after two extra periods in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) men's soccer action Saturday at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago. The Cougars took 17 shots in the game, but only four of the targets were on goal attempts. The visiting Saints had five shots, all on goal. With the tie, SXU remains in second place in the conference standings at 5-1-1 and puts the overall record at 9-4-1. Holy Cross now sits in third place in the CCAC at 4-1-2 and is 7-4-2 on the year.
Breitenbach got things started just under 10 minutes into the game with an impressive goal off a bicycle kick style shot right in front of the goal. The Cougars carried the 1-0 advantage until the 38th minute when HCC freshman midfielder Connor Simpson tied things up off an unassisted shot nearly saved by SXU junior keeper Kyle Held (Palatine, Ill./Palatine). Held finished Saturday's game with four saves for the Cougars.
Saint Xavier (9-4-1 overall/5-1-1 CCAC) goes on the road for its next game on Wednesday, October 17, matching up against CCAC foe Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT). The game is slated for a 7 p.m. start in Chicago.
