Milwaukee, Wis. – A breakaway goal by junior forward Anita Balciunas (Brookfield, Ill./Riverside-Brookfield) less than a minute into overtime gave the Saint Xavier University women's soccer team a thrilling 3-2 victory over Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) foe Cardinal Stritch University (Wis.) on a chilly Wednesday night at Time Warner Cable Stadium in Milwaukee, Wis. Balciunas had a huge game for the Cougars also scoring the game-tying goal to force the extra period in the 82nd minute of regulation. SXU improves to 8-4-1 overall with the victory and sits in a four-team tie for third place in the conference standings at 4-2-0. The Wolves drop to 1-11-0 on the year and 0-6-0 in CCAC play.
Senior midfielder Tammy Contorno (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) gave the Cougars a quick 1-0 lead when she scored less than six minutes into the game on an unassisted shot. Unfortunately for Saint Xavier, Cardinal Stritch freshman forward Anne Kent tied the game on a penalty kick goal in the 35th minute and then followed that up with another goal just over a minute later to give the Wolves the lead. CSU carried the 2-1 advantage until Balciunas scored in the 82nd minute off an assist from senior midfielder Nancy Schueth (Lincoln, Neb./Saint Pius X). Just seconds into overtime, Balciunas broke free from the defense and took the ball 25 yards down field for the game-winning goal. Freshman keeper Cortney Jerzy (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport Township) finished the night with four saves for the Cougars.
Saint Xavier (8-4-1 overall/4-2-0 CCAC) hosts Holy Cross College (Ind.) on Saturday, October 13, for a conference match-up starting at noon at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago. Prior to the game, the Cougars will hold their annual "Cougs Kick Cancer" fundraiser to help raise money for breast cancer awareness.
