CHICAGO - Senior outside hitter Kayla Mullaney (Elmhurst, Ill./York Community) led the way with 12 kills and 12 digs propelling Saint Xavier University to a quick, three-set match win over Ashford University (Iowa) in NAIA volleyball action Tuesday night at the Shannon Center in Chicago. The Cougars were impressive from the start winning by scores of 25-15, 25-13 and 25-20 and averaging 15 kills per set as a team. With the victory, SXU improves to 16-4 overall, while the visiting Saints drop to 14-9 on the year. Senior setter Desiree Aramburu (Chicago, Ill./Radford University/Mother McAuley) also had a nice all-around night for Saint Xavier posting 39 assists, six digs and three service aces.
Senior middle blocker Colleen O'Hara (Lemont, Ill./University of Iowa/Lemont) and sophomore Marie Hackert (Evansville, Ind./Reitz Memorial) each finished with nine kills and two blocks in the match. Both of Hackert's blocks were solo stops. Senior outside hitter Kelly Knudsen (Oak Lawn, Ill./Oak Lawn Community) also played well with eight kills and eight digs, while senior libero Christine Bowe (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) turned in another stellar defensive effort with a team-best 14 digs to go along with two aces and a kill.
Saint Xavier (16-4 overall/6-0 CCAC) heads to Whiting, Ind., this weekend to take part in the two-day Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Crossover Tournament. The Cougars open on Friday, October 5, with a 3 p.m. (central) match against Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.), the first of four matches for the team on the weekend.
