Fulton, Mo. – Finishing in third place overall with a combined, two-round score of 141 (65-first round, 76-second round), junior Kirby Brown (West Des Moines, Iowa/Kirkwood CC/Valley) led the Saint Xavier University men's golf team to a second-place team finish out of the eight-team NAIA field Tuesday at the William Woods University Fall Invitational at Tanglewood Golf Course in Fulton, Mo. The Cougars shot a team score of 295 in the first round Monday and then recorded a 294 Tuesday to finish with a combined team score of 589 for the tournament. Junior James Kerr (Solihull, England/Western Texas/Arch Bishop Ilsley) had the best round for SXU Tuesday turning in a round of 68 to tie for the lowest score of the day at the Invitational.
"With our biggest test of the year, the team played great against a couple of nationally ranked NAIA programs," said SXU golf coach Mike Mandakas. "Although they struggled on the greens today, they hit the ball very well to keep themselves in contention. I am very proud of how they performed over these last two days."
After his first round score of 81, Kerr finished the tournament with a combined score of 149. Junior Brendan Ryan (Alsip, Ill./Moraine Valley CC/Shepard) also had a nice two-day total for the Cougars shooting a 73 on Monday and following that up with a 74 Tuesday for a combined score of 147. Sophomore Kyle Bahnick (Inverness, England/Carthage College/Palatine-Fremd) and junior Dalton Stevens (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kirkwood CC/Jefferson) completed the scoring for SXU. Bahnick turned in a 155 (79-first round, 76-second round), while Stevens finished at 158 (78-first round, 80-second round). Host William Woods University won the Invitational finishing with a team score of 575.
Saint Xavier returns to Chicago and takes some time off before returning to action on Sunday, October 14, to take part in the two-day Chicago State University Invitational. The CSU Invitational is played at Harborside International Golf Course in Chicago.
