CHICAGO – Behind strong outings from sophomore midfielder Marissa Graves (Joliet, Ill./Joliet West) and freshman forward Lexi Cozzi (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township), the Saint Xavier University women's soccer team defeated Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.), 5-0, Tuesday night at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago. The Cougars (6-4-1 overall/2-2-0 CCAC) led 1-0 at the half, but used a strong second half to pull away for good scoring two quick goals in the first two minutes following halftime. Freshman goalkeeper Cortney Jerzy (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport Township) registered her fifth shutout of the season after posting two saves against the Crimson Wave. Saint Xavier had 18 total shots in the game compared to only five by Calumet College.
SXU notched its first goal of the game in the 36th minute off a breakaway score by senior midfielder Nancy Schueth (Lincoln, Neb./Saint Pius X). The goal was set up off a nice lead pass by freshman forward Christina Szocka (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake South). SXU held the 1-0 lead through the remainder of the first half and came out of the halftime break firing on all cylinders. The Cougars got two goals right out of the gate to open the second half.
The first goal came just over a minute into the new period off the foot of Graves on a ball deflected off CCSJ sophomore goalkeeper Amy Gasiorowski and sent to the back of the net on the follow-up shot by Graves. Cozzi recorded the assist on the play. The third goal for Saint Xavier came just 35 seconds later on a shot by Cozzi, who scored on an unassisted play. Sophomore midfielder Monica Chavolla (Chicago Heights, Ill./Bloom) scored the game's fourth goal off of a cross pass from Graves. The Cougars wrapped up the scoring on a penalty kick by sophomore midfielder Danielle Inzinga (Orland Park, Ill./Marist) in the 86th minute.
Saint Xavier (6-4-1 overall/2-2-0 CCAC) hosts No. 24 ranked Judson University (Ill.) on Saturday, October 6. The game begins at 11:30 a.m at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field.
