CHICAGO – Senior Ashley Shares (Palos Park, Ill./Moraine Valley CC/Stagg) led the Saint Xavier University women's cross country team to a 25th place overall finish out of the 51 teams that competed in the 40th Annual Sean Earl Loyola Lakefront Invitational on Saturday, September 29, at Montrose Harbor in Chicago. Shares finished in 45th place with a time of 18:31 out of the 514 runners competing in the 5K (5,000-meter) race. McMaster University (Ontario, Canada) won the race with host Loyola University (Ill.) coming in second place.
Behind Shares was sophomore Leslie Rosario (Fort Myers, Fla./Neosho County CC/North Fort Myers), who came in 202nd place with a time of 19:58. Third across the finish line for SXU was junior Jordan Wallace (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way North), who came in 221st place with a time of 20:10. Rounding out the top five for Saint Xavier was a pair of freshmen in Dana Martin (Chicago, Ill./Marist) and Ann Kolker (Naperville, Ill./St. Francis H.S.) finishing in 281st and 282nd respectively, each with times of 20:49.
"Shares ran an impressive race and also turned in a lifetime best time at the race beating her old best time by 10 seconds," said SXU women's cross country coach Lisa Ebel. "Ashley coming in 45th place out of such a large field of runners is pretty impressive, especially with the caliber of talent that we raced against. We look to continue improving as we enter the final month of the regular season before the conference championships in early November."
Saint Xavier has some time to prepare for its next meet on Friday, October 12, for the Bethel College Invite at St. Patrick's County Park in South Bend, Ind. The women's race is scheduled for a 5:00 p.m. (central) start.
