CHICAGO – Led by a strong performance from junior runner Brian Corcoran (Chicago, Ill./Brother Rice), the Saint Xavier University men's cross country team finished in 22nd place out of 47 teams participating in the 40th Annual Sean Earl Loyola Lakefront Invitational on Saturday, September 29, at Montrose Harbor in Chicago. The winner of the race was the University of Wisconsin with Southern Illinois University, Purdue University, host Loyola University and the University of Chicago finishing out the top five. Corcoran placed 45th out of the 456 runners competing with a time of 26:02.
Finishing behind Corcoran was freshman Eric Hancock (Mishawaka, Ind./Mishawaka) with a time of 27:11, good for 144th place. Junior runners Chris Shellenberger (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) and Shane Kenney (Porter, Ind./Chesterton) finished in third and fourth, respectively, for the Cougars with times of 27:24 and 27:53. Rounding out the top five for the Cougars was senior Ricky Olmedo (Blue Island, Ill./Calumet College/Robert Morris/Eisenhower), who finished in 226th place with a time of 28:02.
"We packed together well as a group and Corcoran ran a good race and is starting to come into championship mode," said men's cross country coach Ed McAllister. "The return of Kyle Counter, although he is not 100 percent yet, is encouraging and that gives us a lot of hope for future meets. This next meet at Bethel College will be very important as it is made up entirely of NAIA teams and ranked teams as well. That will give us a measure of where we stand heading into the conference meet."
Saint Xavier takes some time off before its race on Friday, October 12, for the Bethel College Invite at St. Patrick's County Park in South Bend, Ind. The men's race is scheduled for a 4:30 p.m. start.
