Marion, Ind. – Sophomore middle hitter Marie Hackert (Evansville, Ind./Reitz Memorial) had a huge weekend as the Saint Xavier University volleyball team split its four matches at the Indiana Wesleyan/Indiana Tech Crossover Tournament in Marion, Ind. Hackert was impressive both offensively and defensively racking up 34 kills and 11 total blocks (four solos) at the event. She also had an amazing attack percentage of .469 over the stretch committing just four attacking errors on the weekend. SXU picked up victories against Aquinas College (Mich.) and Marian University (Ind.), but fell to the host schools, No. 10 ranked Indiana Wesleyan University and Indiana Institute of Technology.
In Friday's opening match against Aquinas, the Cougars had little trouble pulling away taking the match in three sets 25-16, 25-12 and 28-26. Senior outside hitters Kayla Mullaney (Elmhurst, Ill./York Community) and Kelly Knudsen (Oak Lawn, Ill./Oak Lawn Community) each posted nine kills in the match. Mullaney also had 15 digs, while Knudsen contributed 13. Senior setter Desiree Aramburu (Chicago, Ill./Radford University/Mother McAuley) recorded 33 assists to the winning effort with senior libero Christine Bowe (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) chipping in a match-best 18 digs.
In a tough match with No. 10 Indiana Wesleyan, Hackert led the way with 12 kills and three blocks (one solo). Unfortunately, Saint Xavier dropped the match in four sets by scores of 25-22, 27-29, 15-25 and 21-25. Mullaney also played well with 16 kills and 13 digs, while Bowe was tough defensively with 27 digs. With the victory, the host Wildcats improved to 18-1 overall on the season.
The Cougars rebounded Saturday morning against Marian University winning in four sets 25-20, 21-25, 25-23 and 25-20 behind 20 kills and 17 digs from Mullaney. Knudsen also played well with 18 kills and Hackert chipped in nine kills and three block assists in the morning match. Aramburu set things up offensively with 35 assists to go along with 13 digs, while Bowe finished with 22 digs and a pair of service aces.
In the tournament's final match, SXU found itself in a hard-fought battle with Indiana Tech. The Cougars fought valiantly, but lost the match in five sets by scores of 9-25, 25-18, 19-25, 25-18 and 7-15. Aramburu had a solid outing with 43 assists and 13 digs. Mullaney posted 16 kills and two aces and Knudsen had a nice all-around effort with 13 kills, a team-best 14 digs and two block assists. SXU had a stellar second set racking up 14 kills to just two errors for a team attack percentage of .480.
Saint Xavier (15-4 overall/6-0 CCAC) hosts Ashford University (Iowa) for a non-conference match-up on Tuesday, October 2. The match is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start at the Shannon Center in Chicago.
