CHICAGO - Despite dropping its first game of the day, 2-0, to No. 1 seed Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.), the No. 2 seeded Saint Xavier University softball team was able to bounce back with a big 8-0 win in six innings over No. 6 seed Trinity International University (Ill.) Thursday to advance to Friday's Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Tournament championship game at the SXU Softball Field in Chicago. The Cougars (28-13 overall) will play the Tigers at 2 p.m. Friday for the tournament title at the SXU Softball Field. SXU will have to defeat ONU twice with the second game, if necessary, immediately following due to the double-elimination format of the event.
In Saint Xavier's first game of the day, Olivet Nazarene junior pitcher Lauren Chessum kept the SXU bats in check throwing a two-hit shutout, which led to ONU's 2-0 victory. Senior first baseman Jory Bodi (Richmond, Ill./Richmond-Burton) went 2-for-2 in the game for the Cougars and provided the team's only offense. Chessum finished the game with nine strikeouts. For Saint Xavier, junior right-hander Nicolle Bartels (Chicago, Ill./Marian Catholic) took the loss (10-5) throwing all seven innings and giving up nine hits, two runs (both earned), and a walk with four strikeouts. ONU scored its first run of the game on a solo homer by freshman third baseman Rachel Comoglio in the top of the fourth inning and got an insurance run in the seventh off a RBI single by freshman shortstop Marisa Baker, who finished with a game-high three hits.
The Cougar offense came to play in their second game of the day against Trinity International, an 8-0 victory in six innings. Senior right fielder Nicole Barker (Chicago Heights, Ill./Marian Catholic) was one of four SXU hitters to tally two hits in the game and finished with a triple, three runs scored and a RBI. Senior shortstop Samantha Lovato (Oak Forest, Ill./Eisenhower) went 2-for-3 with a double, two runs scored, and a RBI. Freshman rightie Jalyn Shearer (Beecher, Ill./Beecher) was unstoppable throwing all six innings and allowing just three hits, no runs, and no walks with seven strikeouts. She improves to 10-4 overall on the season with the victory.
Saint Xavier (28-13 overall/14-3 CCAC) plays No. 1 seed Olivet Nazarene in Friday's CCAC Tournament championship game at 2 p.m. at the SXU Softball Field. The Cougars will have to defeat the Tigers in back-to-back games in order to take the tourney crown.
