CHICAGO - Behind a goal and an assist from junior midfielder Natalie Liakopoulos (Oak Lawn, Ill./Oak Lawn), the No. 8 ranked Saint Xavier University women's soccer team extended its win streak to four games with a 3-1 non-conference victory over No. 18 McKendree College (Ill.) Wednesday at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago. The Cougars (6-1 overall) scored all three of their goals in the second half with junior midfielder Aleks Sudar (Omaha, Neb./Bryan) breaking up the scoreless game with a goal in the 63rd minute of play.
Senior defender Kate Bingham (Lincoln, Neb./Pius X Catholic) and Liakopoulos both recorded an assist on the goal by Sudar which gave SXU a 1-0 lead. Liakopoulos scored Saint Xavier's second goal of the game in the 78th minute off a pass from senior forward Angie Holmes (Shorewood, Ill./Providence Catholic). McKendree answered less than two minutes later (80th minute) when junior forward Brittany Fuzessery found the back of the net off an assist from freshman midfielder Kelsey Johnson.
However, an insurance goal by junior forward Lissa Coby (Lake Villa, Ill./Grant Community) in the 88th minute put the game out of reach for the Beatcats. Holmes logged the assist on the goal by Coby. Freshman Danielle Wagner (Worth, Ill./Stagg) got the start in goal for the Cougars and finished with seven saves.
Saint Xavier (6-1 overall) returns to action on Saturday, September 16, facing Robert Morris College (Ill.) on the road in its Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) opener. Start time for Saturday's match-up is 6 p.m. in Chicago.
