CHICAGO – Behind first-half goals from freshman forward Lexi Cozzi (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township) and junior defender Jessica DePinto (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township), the Saint Xavier University women's soccer team defeated Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) foe Trinity Christian College (Ill.), 2-0, Wednesday evening at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago. The Cougar defense was impressive on the night, especially in the first half where they limited the visiting Trolls to no shot attempts. Freshman keeper Cortney Jerzy (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport) notched her fourth career shutout finishing the day with five saves. It was the first time Saint Xavier has defeated Trinity Christian since a 4-2 victory in the CCAC Tournament back on November 5, 2008.
It did not take SXU long to get on the scoreboard Wednesday. Jerzy took advantage of a strong wind kicking the ball nearly the length of the field and finding Cozzi, who finished the job using a high arching shot over the TCC keeper's head to put her team ahead, 1-0, in the 13th minute of play. The Cougars added some insurance to their lead when DePinto scored the game's second goal on a short shot from five yards deep. Sophomore midfielder Danielle Inzinga (Orland Park, Ill./Marist) provided the assist on the scoring play. The Trolls were much more aggressive offensively in the second half racking up six shots, but the defense held firm turning back every attempt.
Saint Xavier (5-3-1 overall/1-1-0 CCAC) heads to Joliet, Ill., on Saturday, September 29, to face off against CCAC rival University of St. Francis. The game is scheduled for a 4:30 p.m. start.
