CHICAGO – A pair of second-half goals off the feet of sophomore midfielders Luis Medina (Waukegan, Ill./Waukegan) and Brandon Simoes (Brampton, Ontario, Canada/Olivet Nazarene/St. Edmund Campion) propelled a rally that gave the Saint Xavier University men's soccer team a 2-1 victory over Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) foe Trinity Christian College (Ill.) Tuesday night at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago. The Cougars (6-3-0 overall) trailed 1-0 to the visiting Trolls at the half, but finally got on the scoreboard in the 65th minute when Medina found the back of the net. SXU was aggressive offensively throughout the game racking up 18 total shots compared to just nine by TCC.
Trinity Christian took early control of the game when senior forward Noe Quirarte scored on a header into the right side of the goal in the 24th minute of action. Senior midfielder Otniel Gross provided the assist on the opening score. In the 65th minute of play, senior midfielder Kyle Breitenbach (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso University/Valparaiso) fed a pass into Medina, which led to the game-tying goal on a shot from five yards deep. With less than three minutes to play in regulation, Simoes took a perfectly placed cross from Medina and sent a laser shot from the left side that found the upper right corner of the net for the go-ahead score. Junior keeper Kyle Held (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) got the victory in goal for the Cougars finishing the night with five saves.
Saint Xavier (6-3-0 overall/2-0-0 CCAC) travels to Joliet, Ill., on Saturday, September 29, to take on the University of St. Francis (Ill.) Fighting Saints. The conference match-up is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
