Grand Rapids, Mich. - Scoring all three of its goals in the first 40 minutes of play, the Saint Xavier University men's soccer team pulled away early for a 3-0 victory over Cornerstone University (Mich.) Wednesday evening in Grand Rapids, Mich. Junior keeper Kyle Held (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) had a great start in goal for the Cougars logging four saves for his second shutout of the season and ninth of his career. SXU finished the game with 12 total shots, including six on goal attempts. With the win, Saint Xavier improves to 4-3-0 overall, while the Golden Eagles fall to 3-2-1 on the year.
The Cougars kicked off the scoring with a goal by sophomore midfielder Tom Lojek (Palos Hills, Ill./Stagg) in the 24th minute. Lojek took an assist from sophomore midfielder Luis Medina (Waukegan, Ill./Waukegan) and found the bottom right corner of the net to give SXU a 1-0 advantage. Just over 10 minutes later, sophomore midfielder Brandon Simoes (Brampton, Ontario, Canada/Olivet Nazarene/St. Edmund Campion) put Saint Xavier ahead, 2-0, when he scored off a deflected shot attempt in front of the goal. In the 40th minute, senior midfielder Kyle Breitenbach (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso University/Valparaiso) completed the scoring when his shot attempt found the upper right corner of the goal following an assist by senior midfielder Luke Zeiler (Homer Glen, Ill./Nova Southeastern/St. Francis/Lockport).
Saint Xavier (4-3-0 overall) opens Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) play on Saturday, September 22, with a road game against Trinity International University (Ill.). The game is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start in Deerfield, Ill.
