Notre Dame, Ind. – Led by a nice outing from junior Kirby Brown (West Des Moines, Iowa/Kirkwood CC/Valley), the Saint Xavier University men's golf team took part in the first tournament in program history to kick off its fall season earlier this week. The Cougars played at the Holy Cross Invitational hosted by Holy Cross College (Ind.) at Warren Golf Course in Notre Dame, Ind. SXU finished sixth out of the six NAIA teams competing at the two-day tourney, which began on Monday, September 17. Brown completed the tournament with a combined score of 157 shooting a 79 in his first round Monday and following that up with a round of 78 Tuesday to finish No. 14 individually among the 38 NAIA competitors.
"Considering this was the first tournament this team has ever competed at as a group, I thought our guys handled themselves very well," said SXU first-year head golf coach Mike Mandakas. "There was a lot of talent at this event and I thought our guys played pretty well to open the fall season."
In addition to Brown, sophomore Kyle Bahnick (Inverness, Ill./Carthage College/ Palatine-Fremd) posted a score of 161 (79-first round, 82-second round) for the Cougars to finish in the top 20, while junior Dalton Stevens (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kirkwood CC/Jefferson) came in at No. 21 with a combined score of 164 (85-first round, 79-second round). Junior Brendan Ryan (Alsip, Ill./Moraine Valley CC/Shepard) and freshman Zack Trent (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township) were the final two finishers for SXU. Both finished at No. 26 with a score of 168. Ryan shot an 85 in the first round and an 83 for the second round, while Trent had an 83 in the opening round and an 85 for the final day.
Saint Xavier continues its fall season at the Olivet Nazarene University Invitational next week. The Invitational is held at Balmoral Woods Golf Club in Crete, Ill., and the two-day tournament begins on Monday, September 24.
