Normal, Ill. – Led by another impressive finish by senior Ashley Shares (Palos Park, Ill./Moraine Valley CC/Stagg), the Saint Xavier University women's cross country team finished in the top 10 in Friday's Illinois Intercollegiate Championships hosted by Illinois State University in Normal, Ill. Shares finished the 5K (5,000 meters) race in 18:42, which was good for 10th place overall. As a team, the Cougars claimed sixth place out of a competitive field of 24 teams.
Junior Leslie Rosario (Fort Myers, Fla./Neosho County CC/North Fort Myers) finished in 38th place overall with a time of 19:25, which was a 32-second improvement from the last race. Junior Jordan Wallace (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way North) took 44th place with a time of 19:36. Freshman Dana Martin (Chicago, Ill./Marist) and sophomore Elise Prieto (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) rounded out the top five finishers for the Cougars taking 61st and 64th place respectively, with times of 19:50 and 19:53.
"I feel that the team has competed really well so far this season and we strive to get better each week," said SXU women's cross country coach Lisa Ebel. "I am looking forward to what this team can accomplish by the end of the season and see our hard work pay off in the end."
Saint Xavier has two weeks off before its next meet on Saturday, September 29, at the Sean Earl Lakefront Invite at Montrose Beach in Chicago. The race is slated for an 11:45 a.m. start.
