CHICAGO – Sophomore midfielder Morgan Graves (Joliet, Ill./Joliet West) led a late rally by the Saint Xavier University women's soccer team scoring a goal in the 81st minute, but No. 15 ranked Graceland University (Iowa) held off the attempt and captured a 2-1 road victory Saturday afternoon at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago. Graves took advantage of a great pass from freshman defender Kelly Trojak (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) right in front of the goal and finished the play with a nice diving shot. With the loss, SXU falls to 4-2-1 on the year, while the Yellow Jackets improve their overall mark to 5-2-0.
Both of Graceland's goals came off the foot of senior midfielder Gisela Arrieta. After a scoreless first half, Arrieta notched the game's first goal in the 55th minute of play on a follow-up shot after her first attempt deflected off Saint Xavier University freshman keeper Cortney Jerzy (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport Township). Arrieta increased her team's lead to 2-0 in the 79th minute using a nice move to give her a better angle on a short shot right near the front of the net. The Cougars had plenty of opportunities to tie the game after the goal by Graves. The final 10 minutes of play were a flurry of shot attempts and corner kicks, but the Yellow Jacket defense turned back every offensive attack. Jerzy finished the game with five saves for SXU.
Saint Xavier (4-2-1 overall) travels to Deerfield, Ill., on Saturday, September 22, to take on Trinity International University (Ill.) and begin Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) play. The game kicks off at 12 p.m.
