CHICAGO – A goal by freshman midfielder David Edwardson with 40 seconds left in regulation gave Spring Arbor University a 3-2 victory over Saint Xavier University in NAIA men's soccer action Saturday at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago. The late goal spoiled an impressive rally attempt by the Cougars, who trailed 2-0 after the first 25 minutes of play. With the victory, Spring Arbor improves to 7-2-0 overall this season, while SXU falls to 3-3-0 on the year. Senior midfielder Kyle Breitenbach (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso University/Valparaiso) stood out offensively for the Cougars scoring the game-tying goal on a penalty kick in the 74th minute and leading all players with six shots on the day, including four on goal.
SXU dug itself an early hole when freshman forward Abdul Ibrahim found a gap in the defense and scored the game's first goal on a shot from 10 yards deep in the fifth minute. Junior midfielder Joel Musambi assisted the opening goal for Spring Arbor. SAU extended its lead to 2-0 in the 25th minute when Edwardson took a pass from Ibrahim and found the back of the net on a short shot into the left side of the goal. With less than four minutes remaining in the first half, the Cougars cut the deficit in half when junior defender Ryan Butler (Tinley Park, Ill./Moraine Valley CC/Eastern Illinois/Andrew) headed the ball into the goal off a perfectly placed free kick by sophomore midfielder Luis Medina (Waukegan, Ill./Waukegan).
Spring Arbor took its 2-1 advantage into the locker room at halftime and held the lead until the 74th minute when a foul in the box resulted in Breitenbach's penalty kick attempt, which knotted the game at 2-2. With less than a minute to play in regulation, Edwardson broke free from his defender and took a pass from junior midfielder Joel Musambi finishing with a short shot from five yards out to score the game-winning goal. SXU junior keeper Kyle Held (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) got the start in goal and finished with two saves.
Saint Xavier (3-3-0 overall) goes on the road for its next game taking on Cornerstone University (Mich.) on Wednesday, September 19. The game is slated for a 5 p.m. (eastern) start.
