CHICAGO – A goal in the 20th minute of play by sophomore midfielder Morgan Graves (Joliet, Ill./Joliet West) told the tale as the Saint Xavier University women's soccer team got its second straight victory with a 1-0 win over the visiting Vikings of Grand View University (Iowa) Friday at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago. Graves sent a laser shot towards the goal from 25 yards out that bounced off the bottom of the cross bar before making its way into the goal. Freshman keeper Cortney Jerzy (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport Township) had another brilliant performance in goal for the Cougars posting seven saves to log her third career shutout.
The Vikings had their opportunities to tie things up taking 11 shots in the game, including seven on goal. However, the SXU defense held firm behind the strong play of juniors Molly Sheehan (Orland Park, Ill./Stagg) and Jessica DePinto (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township) as well as sophomore Shannon Spethman (Lincoln, Neb./Saint Pius X) and freshman Kelly Trojak (Lemont, Ill./Lemont). Senior Lauren Ciszewski (Alsip, Ill./Saint Ambrose University/Marist) recorded the assist on Graves' go-ahead goal. The Cougars finished Friday's game with eight total shots, including five on goal.
Saint Xavier (4-1-1 overall) takes on the No. 15 ranked Graceland University (Iowa) Yellow Jackets for its next match-up. The game takes place at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 15, at Deaton Field.
