Leesburg, Va. – Saint Xavier University junior free safety Jacob Ghinazzi (Rockford, Ill./Boylan Catholic) was named one of the Beyond Sports College Network (BSN) NAIA Defensive Athletes of the Week when the honors were released by the national media outlet earlier this week. He was one of just two defensive backs in the NAIA to receive the distinction. This award comes in the same week as his Mid-States Football Association (MSFA) Mideast League Player of the Week honor.
Ghinazzi had a tremendous game defensively for No. 1 SXU Saturday night against the then-No.7 ranked St. Francis (Ill.). He tied for the team lead with 10 total tackles (seven solos) as well as a pass break-up, an interception, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. Both his interception as well as the forced fumble and recovery occurred deep in Cougar territory ending two different scoring opportunities for the visiting Fighting Saints. With Saturday's victory, the Cougars extended their current home win streak to 23 games dating back to the home opener of the 2009 campaign. The BSN staff hands out awards for Offensive Line of the Week, Defense of the Week, Offensive Players of the Week, Defensive Players of the Week, and Special Teams Players of the Week. Beyond Sports Network is a sports media site that features colleges and players from the FCS, DII, DIII, and NAIA levels.
Saint Xavier (2-0 overall) hosts Langston University (Okla.) on Saturday, September 15, for a non-conference match-up. The game is set for a 6 p.m. kick-off at Deaton Field in Chicago. The Lions come into Saturday's game with a 1-1 overall mark.
