CHICAGO - Senior midfielder Kyle Breitenbach (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso University/Valparaiso) scored in the 56th minute of action to give the Saint Xavier University men's soccer team a lead it would never relinquish in a 3-2 victory over Taylor University (Ind.) Tuesday night at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago. Sophomore midfielder Luis Medina (Waukegan, Ill./Waukegan) provided the assist on the go-ahead goal by Breitenbach. The Cougars benefited from a pair of own goals off Trojan miscues in the early stages of both the first and second halves.
In the 19th minute of play, Saint Xavier took a 1-0 lead following an own goal by Taylor. The Trojans then tied the game in the 40th minute when freshman defender Josh Urban scored on a shot set up by a perfectly placed corner kick from sophomore forward Danny Cawley. The game stayed at 1-1 heading into halftime, but another mistake by Taylor less than two minutes into the second half led to another own goal and gave SXU the 2-1 advantage. Just three minutes later, Cawley tied the game again on a free kick goal. That set the stage for Breitenbach's game-changing score in the 56th minute. SXU sophomore AJ Pfatschbacher (West Dundee, Ill./Jacobs) finished the night with three saves as the starting keeper for the Cougars. Both teams finished the game with eight total shots apiece.
Saint Xavier (3-2-0 overall) continues its home stand with a game against Spring Arbor University (Mich.) on Saturday, September 15. The game is scheduled for an 11 a.m. start at Deaton Field.
