Joliet, Ill. – Saint Xavier University senior Ashley Shares (Palos Hills, Ill./Moraine Valley CC/Stagg) used a second-place individual finish and a personal-best time at the Olivet Nazarene University Midwest Classic this past Friday to earn the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Women's Cross Country Runner of the Week honor when it was announced Tuesday morning. Shares led the No. 24-ranked Cougars to a third-place team finish out of 11 schools competing at the meet and logged a 5K (5,000 meters) time of 18:41.78, the best of her career for the distance, at the Aspen Ridge Golf Course in Bourbonnais, Ill.
Saint Xavier finished behind only host and No. 3-ranked Olivet Nazarene as well as Taylor University (Ind.), which was among other schools receiving votes in the NAIA's Preseason Top 25 Poll. The Cougars did finish one place ahead of No. 19 ranked Trinity Christian College (Ill.).
Saint Xavier competes again on Friday, September 14, at Weibring Golf Course in Normal, Ill., for the Illinois Intercollegiate Championships. The women's race is slated for a 5 p.m. start.
