Bourbonnais, Ill. – The Saint Xavier University men's cross country team headed to Bourbonnais, Ill., this past Friday to run in the Midwest Classic hosted by Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.). Overall, the Cougars finished third among the 11 teams competing only trailing host Olivet Nazarene and Saint Ambrose University (Iowa). Leading SXU again was junior Brian Corcoran (Chicago, Ill./Brother Rice). Corcoran finished seventh overall among the 112 runners in the 8K race (8,000 meters) in a time of 26:55. Next for the Cougars was freshman Eric Hancock (Mishawaka, Ind./Mishawaka) in 11th place at 26:59. Junior Shane Kenney (Porter, Ind./Chesterton) took the next spot for the Cougars in 18th place with a time of 27:28, followed by junior Chris Sarna (Palos Hills, Ill./Stagg) in 24th at 27:42 and then senior Ricky Olmedo (Blue Island, Ill./Calumet College/Eisenhower) in 30th place with a time of 27:52.
"I am very satisfied with the way we packed up as a team and how well we ran the last two miles," said Saint Xavier University men's cross country coach Ed McAllister. "Corcoran took a wrong turn late in the race, which cost him a number of places. Hancock ran extremely well in his first collegiate race at the 8K distance. However, our times were not quite what I had desired this week. The course was very wet and soggy, with the race suspended 45 minutes due to a pre-race storm, and that affected our overall times. I feel that next week we should all improve our times significantly."
SXU faces an outstanding field of competition this week at the Illinois Intercollegiate Championships hosted by Illinois State University. The men's race is scheduled for a 5:45 p.m. start on Friday, September 14, at Weibring Golf Course in Normal, Ill.
