CHICAGO - A two-out, two-RBI triple by freshman third baseman Matt Mueller (Burbank, Ill./Reavis) in the bottom of the sixth led to a big 3-1 victory for the Saint Xavier University baseball team in the second game of a non-conference doubleheader with St. Ambrose University (Iowa) Wednesday at Richard R. Ferrell Memorial Field in Chicago. The Cougars (28-17 overall) had a chance to sweep the doubleheader, but left the bases loaded in the final inning of game one in a 3-2 loss.
In the first game of the day, SXU took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning on a RBI single by senior designated hitter Ryan Buchler (Schererville, Ind./South Suburban CC). However, two errors in the third inning allowed the Fighting Bees to plate two unearned runs and take a 2-1 lead. A lead-off double to start the fourth inning eventually led to another run for St. Ambrose in the fourth inning, but the Cougars took advantage of a throwing error by the Bees in the bottom of the frame to bring home Buchler from third. Down 3-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh, Saint Xavier was able to load the bases with two outs, but could not get the timely hit to tie or win the game ending on a fly-out to centerfield.
Buchler went 2-for-3 at the plate in game one with a run scored and a RBI, while junior left fielder Joe Miller (Chicago, Ill./Gordon Tech) went 2-for-2. Sophomore righthander Rick Kehoe (Palos Heights, Ill./Richards) took the loss throwing the first six innings and giving up six hits, three runs (one earned), and no walks with two strikeouts. Saint Xavier racked up seven hits in the game, but left six runners stranded on the base paths and had four errors in the field.
In the day's second game, the Cougars again posted seven hits, but this time came up with the timely hit when Mueller plated two runs with two outs in the sixth. Senior left fielder Nick Tantillo (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) and freshman first baseman Mark Siefert (Crest Hill, Ill./Joliet Catholic) each went 2-for-3 with a run scored in game two. The Fighting Bees scored first with a run in the second inning off a RBI single. Freshman shortstop John O'Brien (Lake Zurich, Ill./Lake Zurich) recorded a RBI single in the fourth to tie the game. Mueller's triple in the sixth provided the remaining runs in the game leading to the 3-1 SXU victory. Freshman leftie Jayson Koehn (Beecher, Ill./Beecher) got the win (3-3) in relief throwing the fifth and sixth innings and allowing no hits or runs with a walk and three strikeouts. Junior Shane Longest (Wilmington, Ill./Wilmington) got the save (3) in the seventh with a 1-2-3 inning.
Saint Xavier (28-17 overall/18-2 CCAC) heads to Normal, Ill., this weekend for a three-game series against NCAA Division I Illinois State University to wrap up its regular season slate. The Cougars kick off the series with a 6 p.m. game on Friday, May 4, in Normal.
