Findlay, Ohio – Saint Xavier University senior quarterback Jimmy Coy (Park Ridge, Ill./Valdosta State/El Camino College/Maine South) and junior free safety Jacob Ghinazzi (Rockford, Ill./Boylan Catholic) were named the Mid-States Football Association (MSFA) Mideast League Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, when the honors were released by the league office Monday in Findlay, Ohio. Both players had huge individual performances in the No. 1 ranked Cougars' 31-3 win over then-No. 7 ranked University of St. Francis (Ill.) in SXU's home opener Saturday night at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field.
Coy completed 38 of his 53 pass attempts on the night for 334 yards and four touchdowns. He also carried the ball 11 times for 51 yards. After Saint Xavier fell behind 3-0 early in the second quarter, Coy led three consecutive scoring drives capping each with a touchdown pass to give the Cougars a 21-3 halftime lead. Ghinazzi did a little bit of everything defensively for SXU Saturday night. He tied for the team lead with 10 total tackles (seven solos) as well as racking up an interception, a pass break-up, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. Both his interception and forced fumble and recovery occurred deep in Cougar territory ending two different scoring opportunities for the visiting Fighting Saints. With Saturday's victory, SXU extended its current home win streak to 23 games dating back to the home opener of the 2009 season.
Saint Xavier (2-0 overall) hosts Langston University (Okla.) on Saturday, September 15, for a non-conference match-up. The game is scheduled for a 6 p.m. kick-off at Deaton Field in Chicago.
