Goshen, Ind. - Despite owning a 14-9 advantage on shot attempts in the game, the No. 17 Saint Xavier University men's soccer team never found the back of the net and dropped a 1-0 game to Goshen College (Ind.) Thursday night at the Goshen College Soccer Complex in Goshen, Ind. Junior forward Jacob Yoder scored the game's only goal in the 26th minute of action on a shot from 10 yards out that deflected off SXU sophomore keeper AJ Pfatschbacher (West Dundee, Ill./Jacobs). Pfatschbacher finished the evening with one save for the Cougars.
SXU had its opportunities to tie the game, especially in second-half action. Senior midfielder Kyle Breitenbach (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso University/Valparaiso) narrowly missed a game-tying goal less than three minutes into the second half before it was deflected away by a Goshen defender. With just seconds left in regulation, Breitenbach had a corner kick attempt that nearly resulted in a game-tying header shot by freshman forward Marco Gutierrez (Stone Park, Ill./St. Joseph), but the shot was ruled after the final horn and the goal was nullified.
Maple Leaf sophomore midfielder Caleb Longenecker and senior forward Daniel Martin were credited with the assists on Yoder's game-winning goal. Gutierrez led SXU with two shots on goal, while Breitenbach finished with one. Sophomore midfielder Luis Medina (Waukegan, Ill./Waukegan) and senior defender Sam Vanaria (Chicago, Ill./Adephi University/UW-Parkside/Sandburg) also each had a shot on goal for the Cougars.
Saint Xavier (2-2-0 overall) takes the weekend off and returns to action on Tuesday, September 11, with a tough home match-up against No. 21 ranked Taylor University (Ind.). The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago.
