Palos Heights, Ill. – Led by an eighth-place individual finish by senior Ashley Shares (Palos Park, Ill./Moraine Valley CC/Stagg), the Saint Xavier University women's cross country team ran strong in Saturday's University of Illinois-Chicago (UIC) Home Opener at Horsetail Slough Course in Palos Heights, Ill. The Cougars went up against a strong field of NCAA Division I competitors in the season-opening meet, including Northern Illinois University and host UIC. Shares finished the two-mile course in an impressive time of 11:51.4.
Sophomore Elise Prieto (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) was next across the finish line for the Cougars with a time of 12:12.7 for 17th place. She was followed by junior Jordan Wallace (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way North) in 19th place at 12:20.7 and freshman Dana Martin (Chicago, Ill./Marist) in 20th place at 12:22.4. Sophomore Leslie Rosario (Fort Myers, Fla./Neosho County CC/North Fort Myers) rounded out SXU's top five finishers with a time of 12:41.0 for 29th place. Freshmen Christa Pitts (Franklin Park, Ill./Leyden) and Ann Kolker (Naperville, Ill./St. Francis H.S.) looked solid in their collegiate debuts posting times of 12:47.1 (30th place) and 12:51.2 (31st place), respectively.
Saint Xavier only has a few days to prepare for its next meet, the Olivet Nazarene University Midwest Classic, scheduled for Friday, September 7. The women's race is scheduled for a 5 p.m. start Friday at the Aspen Ridge Golf Course in Bourbonnais, Ill.
