CHICAGO – Sophomore midfielder Marissa Graves (Joliet, Ill./Joliet West) scored the first goal of the game in the 28th minute of action, but it was not enough as the Saint Xavier University women's soccer team suffered its first loss of the season, 2-1, against Siena Heights University (Mich.) Monday evening at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago. SXU falls to 2-1-1 overall this season with the loss, while Siena Heights improves to 2-0-1 on the year. The visiting Saints were aggressive offensively throughout the game totaling 17 shots compared to four for the Cougars.
SXU freshman keeper Cortney Jerzy (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport Township) posted nine saves Monday. Graves notched the opening score off a deflected ball right in front of the goal from two yards deep to put Saint Xavier ahead, 1-0. However, SHU tied the game in the 40th minute off an unassisted shot by freshman midfielder Kacey Lawniczak. The game stayed knotted at 1-1 heading into halftime and the opening 17 minutes of the second half before a twisting shot by senior forward Alessia Vagnini in front of the goal put the Saints up, 2-1. Senior midfielder Katelyn Combs recorded the assist on the go-ahead goal for Siena Heights.
Saint Xavier (2-1-1 overall) stays at home to host Lawrence Technological University (Mich.) on Saturday, September 8. The game is scheduled for a 1:30 p.m. start at Deaton Field.
