CHICAGO – A flurry of scoring in the final two minutes of regulation led to a 2-2 tie after double overtime as the Saint Xavier University women's soccer team evened out with visiting Grace College (Ind.) Friday night in SXU's home opener at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago. With just under two minutes to play in regulation, Grace's sophomore forward Holly Bennett broke a 1-1 tie on a shot from five yards deep. However, the Cougars scored the equalizing goal a minute later when junior forward Anita Balciunas (Brookfield, Ill./Riverside-Brookfield) headed the ball into the goal off a free kick by junior defender Molly Sheehan (Orland Park, Ill./Stagg). Unfortunately for Saint Xavier, another goal in extra periods was not in the cards and the game ended with a 2-2 score.
Freshman forward Alexis Cozzi (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township) got the Cougars on the scoreboard first with an unassisted breakaway goal just 32 seconds before halftime. In the 74th minute of play, the Lancers tied the game when freshman forward Faith Voehringer scored a goal on a breakaway of her own. That would set things up for the wild final two minutes of regulation before both defenses stepped up in the extra frames. Freshman keeper Cortney Jerzy (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport Township) finished the night with eight saves for SXU.
Saint Xavier (2-0-1 overall) continues its home stand on Monday, September 3, with a game against Siena Heights University (Mich.). The game is scheduled for a 5 p.m. start at Deaton Field.
