CHICAGO – Saint Xavier University junior goalkeeper Kyle Held (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) was named the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week when the honors were released Tuesday by the league office. In their season-opening game Friday night, the No. 25 ranked Cougars upset No. 4 University of Rio Grande (Ohio), 1-0, at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago. Held helped pace the shutout, the eighth of his collegiate career, by logging nine saves over the 90-minute affair.
Rio Grande took a total of 24 shots (nine on goal) in Friday's game compared to just six by Saint Xavier. The Red Storm ended its 2011 season in quarterfinals action of the NAIA Men's Soccer National Championships. The Cougars are coming off a big season as well after qualifying for the second round of the National Championships, but lost nine seniors to graduation. This was the first player of the week award given out by the conference for the 2012 season.
Saint Xavier (1-0-0 overall) continues its season with a home game against Aquinas College (Mich.) on Wednesday, August 29. The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start at Deaton Field in Chicago.
