Dearborn, Mich. – Behind a combined 25 kills from senior outside hitter Kayla Mullaney (Elmhurst, Ill./York Community), the Saint Xavier University volleyball team opened its 2012 season by winning two of its three matches at the University of Michigan-Dearborn (Mich.) Tournament Saturday in Dearborn, Mich. The Cougars posted victories over Daemen College (N.Y.) and host UM-Dearborn in three sets apiece, but fell to No. 16 ranked Madonna University (Mich.) in a three-set match. Freshman right side Meghan Falsey (Schaumburg, Ill./Schaumburg) was impressive as well for SXU in her collegiate debut recording 18 kills and nine total blocks (four solos, five assists) over the three matches.
In the team's opening match against Daemen College, Mullaney led the way with 12 kills as Saint Xavier won the match by scores of 25-20, 25-23 and 25-20. Senior setter Desiree Aramburu (Chicago, Ill./Radford University/Mother McAuley) had a solid outing as well with team-bests of 31 assists, 15 digs and three services aces. Against the No. 16 ranked Crusaders, Mullaney and senior outside hitter Kelly Knudsen (Oak Lawn, Ill./Oak Lawn Community) both tallied nine kills, but the Cougars fell by scores of 17-25, 11-25 and 20-25. SXU bounced back in the day's final match winning in three, 25-15, 25-13 and 25-12 behind seven kills by Knudsen. Senior libero Christine Bowe (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) was tough defensively with 20 digs.
Saint Xavier (2-1 overall) continues its season with a road match against Goshen College (Ind.) on Wednesday, August 29. The match is scheduled for a 7 p.m. (eastern) start in Goshen, Ind.
