Bluffton, S.C. – Scoring her second and third goals of the young season Sunday afternoon, freshman forward Alexis Cozzi (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township) has made her presence immediately felt on the Saint Xavier University women's soccer roster. She was the lone scorer in SXU's 2-0 victory over University of South Carolina-Beaufort (S.C.) Sunday in Bluffton, S.C., moving the Cougars to a perfect 2-0-0 record on the year. Freshman keeper Cortney Jerzy (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport Township) also shined on the afternoon for SXU posting seven saves and earning her first collegiate shutout.
The Cougars did all their offensive damage in the game's opening 15 minutes. Cozzi put Saint Xavier ahead, 1-0, in the 12th minute on an unassisted shot from the left side of the box. Just two minutes later, Cozzi found the back of the net again using a header to punch the ball in off a perfectly placed corner kick by junior defender Molly Sheehan (Orland Park, Ill./Marist). The Cougar defense was tough as well keeping the Sand Sharks off the scoreboard despite the home team holding a 14-10 advantage on total shots. The 2-0-0 start to the season is the program's best since 2007. That season , SXU finished 17-4-2 overall and qualified for the second round of the NAIA Women's Soccer National Championships.
Saint Xavier (2-0-0 overall) returns to Chicago and hosts its home opener on Friday, August 31, against Grace College (Ind.). The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago.
