Olathe, Kan. - Saint Xavier University nabbed a No. 5 national ranking in the first-ever 2007 NAIA Spring Football Top 25 Coaches Poll released Monday by the national office in Olathe, Kan. The NAIA Spring Football Top 25 poll is not intended to replace the preseason rating scheduled for mid-August. It is offered as a pre-summer preview of the NAIA and how its raters - 17 coaches from affiliated conferences and independent institutions - are predicting teams will look at the beginning of the 2007 season.

"It is exciting to be ranked No. 5 in a preseason poll, because we have never had such a high rank in a preseason poll," said Feminis. "As nice as the ranking is though, you have to be realistic and realize that it is mostly based on our accomplishments from last season. We still have to take care of business this fall, and this will serve as an excellent motivator."

Defending national champion University of Sioux Falls (S.D.) claimed the top spot in the spring poll with national runner-up University of Saint Francis (Ind.) at No. 2. Rounding out the top five were Missouri Valley (Mo.) at No. 3 and Carroll College (Mont.) at No. 4, respectively. Last season, SXU was ranked No. 8, its highest-ever rank in the August preseason poll put out by the NAIA.

Saint Xavier had an impressive 2006 campaign finishing with a 10-3 overall record and ranked No. 4 nationally, while qualifying for the NAIA Championship Series for only the third time in the program's 14-year history. SXU advanced all the way to the NAIA semi-finals before falling to No. 1 ranked University of Saint Francis (Ind.) in December marking the first time the Cougars have moved past the first round in postseason play.
